Race 6 - St Kilda

Race Directors Report

10,000 competitors, 530 first timers, 188.55 km of racing covered, 134 wave starts, 28 categories, 16 sponsors, 6 events, 4 locations, 3 disciplines, 2 swim cancellations, 1 series – what a ride (or run) it’s been!

One of the biggest fields in Gatorade Triathlon Series history, the most popular of the series so far, made its way to St Kilda today for Race 6, the series finale. The tinge of green that carpeted the usually sun-burnt Catani Gardens and the early morning drizzle stark reminders that yes, summer is gone! The onset of autumn however, far from deterring a massive field from making the most of their last opportunity to race for 8 months.

There was plenty of notable racing as ‘age group’ guns were given a rare opportunity to start behind the elites as the extraordinarily popular male & female ‘Championship Waves’ made their series debut. The top 5 points holders in each category fighting for overall series honors, a definite highlight of the race.

A super quick Gareth Halverson and first time 08/09 Series winner Erin Gangelhoff saving their best til last, taking out the elite male and female categories respectively for the final time this season. Congratulations also to Kristian McCartney and Fiona Turner who’s consistently superb racing since November 23rd 2008 has seen both competitors win the Elite Male and Elite Female categories for 08/09 – the third series win in 4 seasons for the dominant McCartney!

Congratulations to the thousands of competitors, volunteers, staff, sponsors and stakeholders who have helped bring together one of the most remarkable Gatorade Triathlon Series, incorporating the Brooks Fun Tri, in the events long history. Searing temperatures, driving rain, cyclonic winds, celebrities, Olympians, triathlon legends, blistering race times and plenty of high spirits are just a number of the highlights (and lowlights) of season 08/09.

Enjoy your ‘off season’ and we look forward to seeing you again as Season 09/10 kicks off in November 2009
