Race 5 - Elwood
Race Directors Report
Melbourne’s most popular triathlon venue turned it on yet again this weekend as close to 2,500 athletes flocked to Elwood Beach for Race 5 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series, incorporating the Brooks Fun Tri and the Melbourne NISSAN/BRW Corporate Qualifier.
A strong contingent of elites including the ever impressive Erin Densham were out to take a strangle hold on the series, with the overall male and female series winners receiving a $1,500 Hotham voucher to use for high altitude training – a prize that will surely give the lucky recipient the edge they need going into season 2009/10.
The warm Sunday conditions made for fast racing with 07/08 series winner Kristian McCartney and 2008 Olympian Erin Densham eventually taking out their elite categories respectively and proving they’ll be hard to beat come Race 6 – St Kilda.
As always, thank you to all athletes and volunteers who helped Elwood Beach come to life for the second time this series.
A special thank you also, not only from the SuperSprint team, but from everyone associated with the Gatorade Series, to the CFA who were represented beautifully by their 6 teams here today. Their presence and inspirational enthusiasm was a stark reminder of the 'aussie' spirit that has come up against a formidable test over the past nine days.
We look forward to seeing you all Sunday 22 March for the last race of what has truly been a remarkable series.
