Race 3 - Sandringham

Race Directors Report

Perfect racing conditions greeted close to 2,000 competitors today as some of Victoria’s fastest and fittest converged on Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham for Race 3 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series.

After consecutive weeks of swim cancelations, strong winds and wet conditions, the fine weather was a welcome addition to the Sandringham foreshore with eager competitors vying to get back some ground on their duathlete foes in the season's first swim! The Olympic Distance event started in emphatic fashion with the strong elite contingent leading the field out over the 1.5km swim course. Jamie Rhodes and Belinda Harrison led the procession of fast elite male & female swimmers out of the water in an impressive time.

The ultra quick Beach Road cycle course provided the lead athletes with a chance to make a break, and for strong cyclists to catch up, as the field started to sort itself out and settle in for the grueling race ahead! Brett Cooper flew through the field to lead into the run.

The run leg provided some exciting racing with lead changes and a quick pace ensuing the final results would go down to the wire. Brent Schuster and season 07/08’s series winner Madeleine Oldfield finally taking male & female elite category line honors in the Olympic Distance race.

The Sprint and Brooks races also provided plenty of impressive racing with all categories pushing hard and feeling it after perhaps an over indulgent festive season!

With only 3 races to go, series leaders are starting to move away from the rest of the field - some Gatorade competitors already dominating their age group placing in all 3 races so far!

Thanks to all competitors for their participation and support and we look forward to seeing you at Portarlington on 1 February for Race 4!
