Race 2 - Elwood
Race Directors Report
Brave competitors faced wild wintery conditions today as Race 2 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series touched down at the always popular Elwood Reserve!
For the second race running (and for the first time in Gatorade Triathlon Series history) heavy rainfall saw the swim leg replaced with a beach-side run, the altered race format elevating du-athlete specialists to pre race favorites!
With the inclement weather and the inclusion of seasoned heavy hitters Kristian McCartney, Adam Beckworth, Madeleine Oldfield and 2008 Beijing Olympic Erin Densham, racing was always going to be tough! Kristian McCartney led early in the male elite race, however the VIS’s Gareth Halverson held off the field in the final run to record an impressive win over New South Welshman Tim Porter. Oldfield, Lane and Densham fought it out in style in the female elite category, Erin Densham easily proving her status as a genuine Olympic gun, eventually taking line honors ahead of Renee Lane.
The incredibly popular first timer, age group, team and family & friends categories saw some close contests yet again, with the strong winds and occasional showers failing to spoil the spirits and quality of racing of all involved.
Many thanks to the athletes, spectators and volunteers who helped deliver another first class event, our last of the year. Merry Christmas, happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you fired up and ready to tackle Melbourne’s only Olympic Distance event in Sandringham on 13th January 2009.
Happy & safe training.
