Water Pollution Contingency Procedures
If the situation arises where it is deemed that the water quality is unsafe for swimming (based on the amount of rainfall and sunshine during the preceding 24 – 48 hours and taking in to account the guidelines published by the respective state environmental monitoring body) the following contingencies will be implemented.
1. Swim leg will be cancelled and replaced with an additional run leg which will be a distance that takes an approximately equivalent time to complete as the swim leg would have.
2. Wave starts will remain the same.
3. Competitors will be required to bring their swim caps to the start area which will be in the same area as the swim start.
4. Competitors are permitted to wear running shoes.
A decision will be made at 5am on race morning.
Extreme Heat Contingency Procedures
In accordance with ITU guidelines, if the situation arises where there is forecast conditions of extreme heat and / or smoke haze the following contingencies will be implemented.
1. If Temperature is going to be at or over 26C (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) or if Temperature is at or over 31C;
- Increase number or Drink Stations and resources at each
- Increase Medical Resources – marquees, medical staff, fluids, ice and other items as required by the Medical Director.
- Communicate drinking plenty of water, on the website, during the Race Kit Collection, in the Event Information Sheet & Board and over the PA at the Venue
2. If Temperature is going to be at or over 30C (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) or if Temperature is at or over 36C the following contingencies will be implemented in addition to those listed under point 1 above;
- Course will be shortened.
- Start time will be brought forward.
3. If the Temperature reaches or rises over 34C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature or if the Temperature is at or over 40C the event will be cancelled and replaced with an open water swim race.
If there is a sudden change in conditions that require the event to be stopped mid race, staff are to inform marshals and together encourage participants to stop competing and return to the venue. If competitors are on the Swim or Cycle Course, they will not be permitted to continue. If competitors are on the run leg and are determined to continue then they may do so at their own risk
Drink Stations will be left in position for 15 minutes after the event cancellation for returning participants.
If the forecast prior to race day indicates conditions of extreme heat, information will be published at the event and on the SuperSprint web site highlighting the possibility that the contingency plans may be implemented and an outline of those plans.
The final decision to implement the Extreme Heat contingencies will be made at 5am on race day.
Electrical Storm / Extreme Weather Contingency Procedures
If the situation arises where there is an electrical storm or extreme weather conditions immediately prior to or during an event the following contingency plans will be implemented.
1. Electrical storm prior to race start;
- Race start will be postponed to allow the extreme conditions to pass.
- All competitors, marshals, staff and other persons related to the event will be directed to safe areas (structures) until the conditions have eased.
- Revised start times and course distances will be determined by the time taken for the conditions to pass relative to the times required for roads to be reopened to traffic.
2. Electrical storm during race;
- If it is determined by the race committee that the race must be stopped due to the proximity of an electrical storm or conditions of extreme weather all competitors, marshals, staff and other persons related to the event will be advised to move to a safe area.
- The decision to stop the race will be communicated to all staff and marshals on the course by way of two way radio and mobile phone. This information will then be passed onto competitors who will be advised of the nearest safe area.
- Once the weather conditions have eased or passed all competitors will make their way back to the event venue where a decision regarding recommencement of the event will be made subject to the prevailing weather conditions and time remaining until the roads are required to be reopened
Other Unforeseen Circumstances
In the case of an unforseen circumstance such as a fire, a gas leak or a serious accident (prior or during the event) on the course then the course may have to be altered prior to or even during the race.
