Race 5 - Portarlington

Race Director's Report

Dear Competitor,

What a day!  It was one of those days that stands out as a great event - the racing, the atmosphere, the weather, the spectator crowd, and the positive and friendly feel of the event.

Congratulations to the elite winners Paul Attard and Madeleine Oldfield, all age-group category winners and all of the first timers and Brooks competitors.

The Portarlington event is a special event for SuperSprint.  It is the first event we organised 24 years ago and it is such a great location and course. To come down to Portarlington from Melbourne and Beach Rd it is so peaceful and relaxing and I think this is reflected in the mood and atmosphere.

Next year we plan to celebrate the 25th anniversary in a big way!  It is important if you have any suggested improvements, to let us know in the survey.  Suggestions are greatly appreciated and the best will recieve a free entry into next year's event.

We wish you all the best with your training and racing and hope to see you at one of our upcoming events.  The Series finale is at St.Kilda on the 21 March.

All the best,

David Hansen

Extreme Weather and Cancellation of Events

SuperSprint has experienced many challenges caused by the weather over the years including Race 4 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series at Elwood last month due to the heat and wind. It seems that the weather is becoming more volatile right across Australia which is one of the reasons that we introduced the Race Cancellation Refund Levy option 4 years ago.

Last weekend in Sydney, Triathlon NSW had to cancel a race which was part of their major series at Kurnell on race morning due to the hazardous conditions caused by rain and flooding. This was the first time a race in this series had been cancelled since its inception in 1991. The Terms and Conditions of the event, similar to SuperSprint and other events, stated that refunds would not be available if the event was cancelled as the costs of the event are the same regardless of whether it is held or not.

Discussion within the triathlon community that followed this situation suggested that event organisers should include insurance in the entry fee, however this would increase the entry fee by over $10. For this reason SuperSprint offer competitors the option of paying the Race Cancellation Refund Levy so that if in the unlikely occurrence of an event being cancelled those that have paid the levy are entitled to a full refund of their entry fee.
