2010/11 St.Kilda Wrap Up
Weather – 25 Degrees, fine and sunny
Number of Entrants – 2,360
Race 6 is known for the party atmosphere that it creates. The last race of the series means the end of the early morning swim training sessions, the speed work on the bike and the runs on the hot and sticky summer days. It also means sleep in’s on Sunday mornings can occur a little more regularly.
But for others, Race 6 at the St. Kilda Triathlon is the make or break race. Every age grouper that put in a great race at Race 5 – Elwood and got themselves in contention for the Series Winner of their age group was focused and ready to explode out of blocks. For many age groups, the number of points between 1st-4th was only a mere 5 points. The creation a few years ago of the Championship Wave for all top 5 competitors in series points across the age groups seemed to enhance the competitive juices of everyone at the start line.
Another huge field turned out for the race, as did the large number of spectators cheering on their family and friends as they got around the course. It wasn’t long at all until the crowd saw a familiar face in Brendan Sexton take line honours for the 4th time this series and with it the Series Champion Trophy. Peter Kerr made a strong return since his last race of the series with 2nd place, followed by Craig McKenzie in 3rd, that sealed his runner up trophy for Series Champion.
Tim Clarke finished 5th to ensure he claimed the 3rd place Series Champion Trophy for his super consistent season.
In the Female Elite, Madeleine Oldfield was back to her usual tricks at the front of the pack, however she was up against an Australian Triathlete star in Erin Densham. Densham took out the line honours from Oldfield but she had done enough to claim the Series Champion award. Aislinn Prendergast came across in 3rd place. For the Series Champion minor awards, Melissa Vanderwater was rewarded for her consistent season with 2nd place, while Elly Franks claimed 3rd place for the Series.
Race 6 also welcomed back the Sacred Heart Mission to the racing field. Now in its 3rd year competing at the St.Kilda Triathlon, Sacred Heart had 33 competitors racing across both the Gatorade and Active Feet competitions. The spirit and camaraderie that the group displays is sensational to see.
