2010/11 - The Melbourne Triathlon (Sandringham) Wrap Up
Weather – 23 degrees, overcast with moderate wind
Number of Entrants – 1918
More so than Race 1, you can always count on Race 3 being the ‘shiniest’ triathlon. The reason, everything is still brand new from Christmas! The new bikes that get wheeled out, the shiny helmets, the slick bike shoes and runners, the reflecting running singlet’s with the crease lines still showing or the brand new pair of sunglasses are all on show. But they are all necessary.
The Melbourne Triathlon, the only Olympic Distance held in Melbourne came back to Sandringham for yet another year and put on another stellar show for all involved.
The 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run made all competitors think about what they were getting themselves into. The weather held up its end of the bargain by putting on great day for racing, going someway to apologise for the conditions at Race 2 – Elwood. The fast and slightly undulating cycle course from Trevor Barker Oval was a great change, and really had competitors rethinking the way they would attack the course.
Kristian McCartney took control of a race missing Series leader Brendan Sexton and defending champion Peter Kerr and set about showing those in the elite men’s field who else is out there and keep an eye on. McCartney raced perfectly in the swim and ride before taking all before him and taking the tape at the finish. Craig McKenzie followed in 2nd but the big surprise was Monty Frankish, who stormed into 3rd place. A lot has been said about Frankish and in the longer distance he came to the party with a very impressive performance.
In the Elite Female category, it was Madeleine Oldfield again who thrived on the longer distance and tore the other competitors apart with a very strong cycle leg and an even better run leg. If her dominance hadn’t already been known so far this series, it was well and truly rubber stamped following this performance. Kate Murphy and Tegan Smith rounded out the top 3 females but it was Oldfield’s commanding performance that had tongues wagging.
