2010/11 Race 1 - St.Kilda Wrap Up

Weather – 22 degrees with sunny skies and a light wind.

Number of Entrants – 2128

With the beginning of a new triathlon series brings new enthusiasm, high excitement and lots of nerves.  The beginning of Victoria’s Premier Triathlon Series, the Gatorade Triathlon Series, incorporating the Active Feet Fun Tri Series was no different.

With a huge field attacking the swim, ride and run with gusto on the iconic St. Kilda Course, the opening race set the tone for what lay ahead for the 2010/11 series.  The huge number of first time triathletes added to the excitement and atmosphere around the venue.

The Elite Male and Female field was one of the strongest for the 1st race in some time.  Athletes who had migrated north of the Victorian boarder for winter returned, showing some great skills and speed in all the disciplines.  Of the males, Brendan Sexton came out the victor in a tight struggle with Jamie Huggett, Peter Kerr and Kris McCartney, signalling his intention to dethrone last year’s Elite Series Winner in Kerr.

Of the Female Elites, defending champion Madeleine Oldfield picked up where she left of from the 2009/10 series by claiming another top podium finish.  If anything, Oldfield looked stronger and exuded more confidence from the previous season, which would have sent a shiver down the spine of her rivals.
