Bike Safety and Ethics

Riders on Course

When you ride as a group, your conduct will directly affect the flow of the group on the road. Riding in a group such as this will have a mix of experienced riders, and those who have not fully developed their pack riding skills. It is important to recognise which category of rider you fit into, and act accordingly.

  • Strong riders need to protect the weaker – don’t expose them to the dangers on the road.
  • Weaker riders need to make the group aware they are struggling, uncomfortable with the current situation or unsure of how to handle the current conditions.

Below are a number of key points to be aware of throughout the ride:

  • keep your eyes forward
  • make the group "aware" of obstacles
  • do not overlap wheels
  • use correct water bottles
  • learn the pack dynamics of turning

Event Communication Mobile

Mobile

If you require assistance while on the course you can either use your own mobile phone to contact the event mobiles or advise a course marshal, police officer, traffic management or event staff member, who will then call for assistance.

There will be two Event Mobile Numbers:

  • Event Medical Mobile: for medical assistance and emergencies only
  • Event Maintenance Support Mobile: for the SRAM on course support for bike maintenance

NOTE: The Event Mobile numbers will be noted on the event information sheet sent via email the week prior to the event.

Ambulance and Insurance Cover

Medical

Ambulance Cover

SuperSprint contract Ambulance Victoria to provide paramedic and ambulance support on course - three will be in attendance.

Mobile Medical support will also be in attendance, including Doctors, Sports Trainers, Paramedics and 2 Medical Support Vehicles.

It is strongly recommended that participants have ambulance cover – ambulances will be in attendance at the event, however if you require transport by ambulance you will be charged for this service

Insurance

The 2XU Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride 2009 is covered by public liability insurance but this does not cover accidents caused by individuals or other riders. It is therefore strongly recommended that you have personal accident insurance (Cycling Australia, Bicycle Australia, Triathlon Australia) or medical cover along with ambulance cover, or a suitable level of health insurance.

Hydration and Refreshment Stops

Start

Refreshments

Hydration Tips

It is essential that participants carry two drink bottles as hydration must be a priority for all participants. The general rule is that you should be consuming at least one litre of water for each hour of cycling. Do not let yourself get to the point where you are thirsty as this is the first sign of dehydration.

The hydration process should start 24 hours prior to the event and especially before the start of the event.

Refreshment Stops

The designated refreshment stops are at the following locations:

  • Refreshment Stop 1 - Moriac (approx. 25km): Opposite General Store and café.Toilets and water available.
  • Refreshment Stop 2 – Brickmakers Rd (approx. 51km): Water only
  • Refreshment Stop 3* – Deans Marsh (approx. 73km):  Over the road from the General Store. Toilets available.
  • Refreshment Stop 4 – Lorne (approx. 95km): Next to Lifesaving Club. Toilets, water and Ascend hydration products available.
Click Here to learn more about Ascend
  • Refreshment Stop 5 – Airey’s Inlet (approx. 114km): Water only
  • Refreshment Stop 6 – Anglesea (approx. 124km): At Go Ride a Wave Café. Toilets and water available.
  • Refreshment Stop 7 – Forest Rd / Great Ocean Road (approx .45km for the 60km Participants only): Water only
  • Refreshment Stop 8 – Torquay (approx. 145km): Elephant Walk Reserve. Toilets, water and Ascend hydration products available.

Lorne Meeting Point

PostEvent

The Lorne Meeting Point is just over half way through the 145km ride and located on the Lorne Foreshore next to the Lifesaving Club. The meeting point provides a good opportunity for cyclists to refresh and wait for friends, rather than them waiting at the Lorne roundabout which was cause for much congestion last year.
Please note, no cyclists will be permitted to stop at the Lorne roundabout due to safety concerns.

As you come down the hill into Lorne, there will be a sign at the Lorne roundabout pointing into town and onto the Lorne refreshment station and official meeting point.

We encourage cyclists to take advantage of this as there are many benefits of stopping in Lorne - there will be drinks and food products on offer, bike racks, toilets and a large grass area with a fantastic view as you relax with /or await your friends!
