Benwerrin to Lorne Hill Descent Information

Due to concerns raised by the local authorities regarding cyclist and motorist safety during the descent from Benwerrin to Lorne, SuperSprint have devised a descent plan to separate cyclists from vehicles, which will be implemented to improve overall safety.

A holding zone will be created approx 500m past Benwerrin, at the start of the descent. Police and a Traffic Controller (TC) will manage the cyclists and vehicles that are heading down the hill to Lorne.

Cyclists will be permitted to descend until a vehicle accumulates at the holding point. Once a vehicle is being held cyclists are permitted to descend until the TC stops them. The TC will not release the cars until a sufficient time buffer between the last cyclist and the car has been created. Once all the cars are clear a similar buffer will be created between the last car and the first cyclist, prior to the cyclists being released in small waves to descend the hill.

Cyclists will continue to descend until another car arrives at the holding point. At this time the holding process will commence again. The holding point is located at a slow turn out lane, so there is sufficient room off the road.

Please adhere to the directions of the Police and TC to ensure safety of cyclists and motorists and to ensure that the authorities have no objection to the ride continuing in 2010.

Descending Rules

  • No crossing the white line / wrong side of road
  • No overtaking / tailgating vehicles
  • Do not exceed 60km/hour

Ambulance and Insurance Cover

Medical

Ambulance Cover

SuperSprint contract Ambulance Victoria to provide paramedic and ambulance support on course - three will be in attendance.

Mobile Medical support will also be in attendance, including Doctors, Sports Trainers, Paramedics and 2 Medical Support Vehicles.

It is strongly recommended that participants have ambulance cover – ambulances will be in attendance at the event, however if you require transport by ambulance you will be charged for this service

Insurance

The 2XU Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride 2009 is covered by public liability insurance but this does not cover accidents caused by individuals or other riders. It is therefore strongly recommended that you have personal accident insurance (Cycling Australia, Bicycle Australia, Triathlon Australia) or medical cover along with ambulance cover.

Lorne Meeting Point

Girls

The Lorne Meeting Point is just over half way through the 145km ride and located on the Lorne Foreshore next to the Lifesaving Club. The meeting point provides a good opportunity for cyclists to refresh and wait for friends, rather than them waiting at the Lorne roundabout which was cause for much congestion last year.
Please note, no cyclists will be permitted to stop at the Lorne roundabout due to safety concerns.

As you come down the hill into Lorne, there will be a sign at the Lorne roundabout pointing into town and onto the Lorne refreshment station and official meeting point.

We encourage cyclists to take advantage of this as there are many benefits of stopping in Lorne - there will be drinks and food products on offer, bike racks, toilets and a large grass area with a fantastic view as you relax with /or await your friends!
